Charles was devoted to God, family and country, an honest hard working man. He was proud to be in the U.S. Navy Seabees and serving his country. He loved Montana, the mountains and the great outdoors. He loved taking his children hunting, fishing and camping. He was strong in commitment to faith, family, friends, work and country. He died doing what he always did: helping others. Charles was driving a Humvee on Oct.25th in Iraq's Anbar Province when a roadside bomb detonated, killing him and four U.S. Marines in the vehicle. He was with the Marines to do electrical work to improve their living conditions. He took a sense of pride and accomplishment in helping the Marines out. As an electrician for the Navy, Komppa spent his days conducting electrical assessments and repair projects throughout western Al Anbar Province. "Chuck loved the military. He knew that the job he was doing was going to make the lives of others safer and improve their standard of living greatly."(Petty Officer Starks NMCB-18) The sense of duty, honor and courage demonstrated by Chuck Komppa was in the finest tradition of the U.S. Military, a tradition that is strong in Montana. His Medals Include: Purple Heart, Navy Acheivement Medel, Naval Reserve Meritorious Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Global War on Terror, Iraq Campaign Medal.
