  • 090903-N-4440L-136 HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan (Sept. 3, 2009) Equipment Operator 3rd Class Matt Medeiros and Equipment Operator 3rd Class Darnell Baker, attached to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74, Alpha Company, use up-armored bulldozers to form three miles of sand berm for the Camp Leatherneck expansion project. Up-armored heavy equipment is essential to the personal security of Seabees working in the open desert.  NMCB-74 is deployed to Afghanistan supporting the NATO International Security Assistance Force and is one of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command warfighting support elements providing construction support. Piling the rock saves material, which will serve as the top course for a foundation pad, from being lost.  More than 23,500 cubic meters of rock will go into building foundations for a new camp.
