  • Bridge on Bougainville named for Chief Eddy Carruthers. A detachment of Seabees under Chief Carruthers was cutting a road in advance of the front lines when the detachment was attached by the enemy. Carruthers and 6 others were killed and 20 wounded. The entire detachment might have been wiped out if not for the gallentry of Chief Joe Bumgarner and his men which were building a bridge when they heard the firing against Carruthers. Bumgarner led his men to the rescue and evacuated the casualties
